Maneki Neko means "Beckoning Cat" or "Lucky Cat"
A raised right paw to attract or bring in wealth, good luck, and protect it with a "koban" coin around its neck to symbolize this wealth. A raised left paw is a sign of welcoming.
Many different Japanese legends explain how cats are considered lucky. Maneki Neko sculptures are found in banks, Japanese shrines, homes, and retail establishments.
It is wise to obtain a new one every year.
